How to play

  1. Meet the question

The first question is ready as soon as the game opens; use New round to replace the set.

  2. Work it out

Enter a whole-number answer for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or exact division. Work inside brackets first.

  3. Take your time

The first four questions use smaller numbers, the next four use larger numbers, and the final two combine operations. There is no timer.

  4. Review your result

Continue until you complete all 10 questions, then review your result.

Inside the game

What is Mental Math?

Mental Math practice generates 10 whole-number questions: two carrying additions, two borrowing subtractions, two two-digit multiplications, two exact divisions, and two bracketed calculations. Operands grow after the first four questions. Every answer is positive, and there is no countdown.

How your score works

Your result is the number of correct answers out of 10. Blank, decimal, expression, or non-numeric entries are not accepted as answers. Existing personal bests are retained; older results may come from the previous, simpler questions and are not directly comparable with the current set.

Example: solve before typing

For 47 × 6, calculate 40 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 240 + 42 = 282. For (47 + 18) × 3, work inside the brackets first: 65 × 3 = 195. Enter only the final number.

Playing tips

  1. Break addition and subtraction into tens and ones

    For 36 + 27, combine 30 + 20 and 6 + 7, then join 50 and 13. For subtraction, remove a convenient ten before the remaining units.

  2. Split multiplication and reverse division

One factor has two digits and the other is a single digit. For 47 × 6, multiply the tens and ones separately. For 252 ÷ 7, check that 7 × 36 = 252 before entering 36.

  3. Keep the bracketed result in mind

The final two questions combine operations. Complete the bracketed addition or multiplication first, then multiply or subtract outside it. There is no timer, so take the time you need.

  4. Read the operation first

Read the operation sign before calculating the numbers.

  5. Estimate before subtracting

For subtraction, estimate the answer first to catch a reversed calculation.

  6. Break the calculation apart

Split two-digit multiplication into tens and ones, and check division by multiplying back.

  7. Start inside the brackets

Calculate the bracketed part before applying the outside operation.

Questions, answered.

Results describe this game session. They are not IQ scores, diagnoses or clinical assessments.

No. This game uses whole-number answers only, so enter an integer with no decimal point.

Every round includes addition with carrying, subtraction with borrowing, two-digit multiplication, exact division, and two bracketed calculations. Division always has a whole-number answer.

No. Every generated answer is a positive whole number, including division and bracketed calculations.

The game shows the correct answer, then presents the next question until the 10-question round is complete.
