How to play

  1. Choose your puzzle

Choose Today’s puzzle for the UTC daily board, or Practice for a fresh theme and layout.

  2. Trace a straight line

Select a word’s first letter, then its last letter in one straight horizontal, vertical or diagonal line, in either direction.

  3. Find all eight

Find all eight listed words. Use arrow keys to navigate, Enter or Space to select, and Escape to cancel a first letter.

  4. Use hints thoughtfully

Select a listed word for a starting-letter hint. That word earns no point; find the rest without hints for a higher result.

Inside the game

What is Word Search?

This hard word search uses a compact 12×12 board with eight words from one everyday theme. Words can overlap and run diagonally or backwards. There is no timer. Today’s puzzle is the same for everyone on the same UTC date; found words and hint use resume in this browser after a refresh. Practice creates a new board without replacing daily progress.

How your score works

Finish all eight words to save the number found without a hint, from 0 to 8; higher is better. A starting-letter hint marks that word as assisted before you find it. Invalid selections cost nothing. A completed daily puzzle is not saved again on reload. Different layouts are not equal-difficulty score comparisons.

Example: read a word backwards

Suppose a row contains R E V I R. Select the R at one end and the R at the other to find RIVER backwards. Both directions are accepted, but the full selection must match a listed word. A bend through nearby letters does not count.

Playing tips

  1. Scan one direction at a time

Find a possible first letter, check its eight straight directions, then move to another candidate. For a long diagonal, use the row and column labels or arrow keys to keep the line straight.

  2. Use hints deliberately

A word-list button marks its starting letter and labels the word as hinted. It does not finish the word for you. Only words found without requesting a hint contribute to the saved result.

  3. Start with an unusual letter

Look for an uncommon first letter, then check all eight directions from it.

  4. Look in both directions

Read backwards as well as forwards; the word list always uses normal spelling.

  5. Reuse shared letters

Overlapping words can share letters. A marked letter may belong to another word too.

Yes. Found letters remain selectable until the board is complete, so you can use a crossing letter for another word.

Eight words are hidden among 144 letters and may run backwards or diagonally. The compact board is designed for browser play; there is no timer or claim that it matches another puzzle site’s difficulty scale.
